What does grade level writing look like at different points in the year for kindergarten? First grade? Second grade?
What should we be assessing for? If you are in a Common Core state, then you will want to know if your class can meet the CC standards. However, some of the standards for writing include the statement “with guidance and support from adults”. Since students can do just about anything with guidance and support from adults, those aren’t really measurable. They state more about what students should be exposed to.
I went on Dave Matteson’s website where he shows anchor papers. There are examples of good writing, but I don’t know whether students got some editing and planning help, or if they were done independently with no adult help. I sent Dave an email via his website and hope to hear back soon. I think anchor papers are only truly legitimate if they are “on demand” as the Common Core link calls it.
Using the Burlington SD site with the links to Dave’s anchor papers click here to see, we could also ask, are all of these areas neccessary to assess?

Do you know of some other examples of anchor papers?
Does your school or district assess writing, and if so, how? Even if it’s not perfect. share what you like and don’t like about it. We learn just as much from what doesn’t work.
Hope to hear from you soon!
